More Things to Know

  • Never use salt licks or mineral wheels

  • Make sure that your guinea pigs don’t use wire bottomed cages, litter boxes with grids, and/or holey floors or ramps

  • Always keep toxic things away from the guinea pigs (including plants, cleaning products like pine sol, and baking soda)

  • Never use cedar shavings (harmful for the respiratory system and liver over time)

  • Make sure your guinea pigs always, always have tons of hay to eat and sleep/hide/play/potty in, too!

  • Predator animals like dogs and cats should be kept away from the guinea pigs at all times

  • Buy things like hay and pellets in bulk! It is much less expensive in the long run

  • Chews like apple sticks, toilet paper rolls, and pinecones make for fun, safe toys

  • Never use hay balls or hay wheels

  • If you are using a hay rack or bag, make sure that the piggy can access the hay easily but also not get stuck

  • Trim your piggies’ nails every 4-6 weeks

  • Guinea pigs should never have exercise wheels, balls, etc. They don’t need them and it’ll hurt their backs! Supervised floor time is much better.
