Fostering with Us
We’re always looking for loving foster families to care for our piggies while they wait for their forever homes. Fostering is a wonderful way to make a difference in the life of a neglected or abandoned guinea pig, helping them feel safe, cared for, and comfortable around people.
Cavies & Canines is 100% foster-based, which means every guinea pig in our rescue lives with families like yours until adoption. We especially welcome foster families with previous guinea pig experience, but no experience is required—just a willingness to learn and plenty of love to give.
We’ll provide everything you need to get started, including a proper cage set-up, bedding, hay, pellets, and other essentials. Foster families are responsible for supplying fresh vegetables daily. In addition, we offer free nail trims and health checks at our Wellington headquarters, as well as free boarding if you go on vacation or need temporary coverage.
Before Applying
Before you apply to be a foster, give the following some consideration:
Educate yourself on guinea pig care. Our care guide is a good starting point. We require all potential fosterers to educate themselves on guinea pig care and best practices prior to fostering guinea pigs
Make sure that everyone in your household is agreeable to fostering and the responsibilities that come with fostering.
Find someone who can be a personal reference. This is ideally someone who can speak about any past pet ownership or foster experience and your love for animals/guinea pigs.
